I have just returned from college where I had gone to enrol on my second year of furniture design and carpentry. I completed my first year and passed with the highest grade and got a distinction. However 12 days before my second year is due to start David Cameron has decided to take away the funding for adult education, so my course can no longer run. I’m 23 and I have worked full-time paying taxes for the past 4 years. When I was in school I worked weekends and evenings to support myself. I know plenty of people who are going to university or are already there, contributing nothing in taxes and getting themselves in masses of debt with barely any job prospects at the end of 3-4 years. Yet it seems better to the government for people to do this rather than supporting somebody like me who works 40hrs a week and attends college for 3hrs after work to gain new skills with the hope of improving my life. This makes no sense to me at all. I guess working class people like me who want to learn more and progress into careers in which their talents are used to their full potential should just give up and accept that under a conservative government and as part of a ‘big society’ you have no hope of anything other than remaining working class, scraping and struggling to get by with your passions going to waste.
If you believe in education for everybody or are just sick of Camerons big shiny face ruining your day please reblog this.
